THE CHALLENGE

The PETRONAS Dulang offshore platform suffered a recurring problem with its Gas Compressor, resulting in significant costs due to unplanned downtime, production deferment and frequent maintenance activities. Just prior to VROC's engagement, the operator had a 48 hour shutdown window to perform the necessary maintenance to fix the root cause of the problem.

Client engineers performed standard reliability analysis taking 4,000 man-hours to identify the cause of the failure.

After the analysis was complete, engineers and subject matter experts had little confidence that their plan to rectify the fault during the shutdown window would be successful.

THE VROC SOLUTION

VROC ingested one year of a historical data set provided by the Dulang Team.

VROC processed the 12 months of data in 90 minutes and came to the same conclusions as the reliability engineers, producing the results 2,000x faster without requiring any subject matter expertise

In addition to validating the subject matter experts recommendations, VROC found additional factors and failure causes that had not been picked up by the standard reliability analysis such as equipment being operated in the incorrect mode

THE RESULTS

With the insights acquired by the VROC platform, the Dulang team were able to

  • Identify the root causes of the Gas Compressor problem 2,000x faster than the standard reliability analysis
  • Identify an incorrect equipment operating mode, which was contributing to equipment failure
  • Prolong the Gas compressor reliability from a maximum of two weeks running, to four months
  • The GCM uptime was improved to the value of $21.7m USD
  • As a result, VROC was engaged to provide real time predictive analytics for all equipment on the platform to improve platform reliability
